spectral line

In a spectrum, an absorption or emission feature covering a relatively narrow wavelength range. Line spectra result when there is a transition between two of the discrete energy levels of an atom or ion. A transition to a lower energy state, with the emission of a photon, results in an emission line. A transition to a higher energy state, with the absorption of a photon, results in an absorption line.
